TNR - Trap - Neuter - Return

What is TNR? Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) - TNR is the humane process for trapping community cats, having them spayed/neutered and vaccinated, ear-tipping them for identification, and returning them to their outdoor home. This prevents unwanted litters, reduces nuisance behaviors, and improves the cats quality of life

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a Powhatan resident and cats must be located on your property.

  • Cats must be community/feral outdoor cats.

  • Caregiver cooperation is required.

How TNR Appointments are Scheduled

  • Purr Heaven Sanctuary does not trap cats until a spay/neuter appointment has been secured.

  • Appointment availability for free spay/neuter is limited and is made possible by the generosity of nonprofit organizations and generous donors who work tirelessly to support TNR efforts throughout the RVA area.

  • Additional Appointment Options - Low cost appointments are available through a low cost clinic that we use.  You must pay for the low cost appointment.

  • Each cat receives spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, and an ear tip.

  • Ear-tipping: The universal indicator that a cat is part of a TNR program, where a tiny portion of one ear is removed while the cat is under anesthesia so that it can be identified in the future. It shows that someone cared about this cat.

TNR Process

  • Cats are trapped, transported to vet clinic for appointment, recuperation time, returned to your property.  Sign form here when we have agreed to TNR for you.

  • If there are kittens you want trapped they MUST not be nursing and able to eat kitten food, weigh 3 pounds and be at least 8 weeks old.  Kittens will be returned and it is your responsibility to find homes for them if you would like them to be adopted.

Supporting Our TNR Program

  • Purr Heaven Sanctuary is operated entirely by two people and is funded through donations.  While donations are never required for TNR assistance, they are greatly appreciated and help offset the costs of fuel, trap maintenance, transportation, supplies, and the ongoing care of rescued cats at our sanctuary.

  • Every donation helps us continue assisting community cats and the residents who care for them.
